Home Made Knitting Needles

Home made Knitting Needles
Knitting Basket for my daughters 1st grade class

Supplies:
wooden dowels.
pencil sharpener to sharpens the ends
fine sandpaper, to smooth them
heavy duty pair of scissors
mineral oil
carpenter wood glue

Optional : wooden painted knobs / purchased @ Michaels
Decorates the needles with knobs on the ends.

The way I made them was to basically use wooden dowel rods ( hobby/craft- Michaels),

sizes are different , so pick a size you are comfortable with for your project.

I slip the dowel and checked the size , and it was a 5mm , 8 US . I thought that was a good size for a bunch of 1st graders and beginners at that.

Then cut the dowels about 8" long, or whatever length you feel is appropriate for what you are doing.

Then use a pencil sharpener to make the rough points, ( one end only) and then take sandpaper to the whole needle, then used some mineral oil, to condition the needles

Then to cover the ends,
I used these wooden knobs I found in the jewelry section at Micheals .
colorful with polka dots and the larger ones even has a face painted on them
( these were in the doll making section @ Micheals)

On these I got creative and used some yarn to make hair styles on the top of the ball and just glued it on.
Hair Styes: Mohawk, pink peg tails, blonde pony tail, green bob

I had to sharpen the dowel ( flat end) a little, just enough of a point to enter it on the all ready made hole on the wooden knobs.
Then you place some glue on the tip and place the knob in place.
******** Let the glue dry & ALL DONE ! ********

Adding the Patons Cha Cha with the yarn really adds texture and a funky feeling to the hat, along with the pom poms on top. I think you’re never to young or old to sport some unique headgear.

Knit One Save One

Knit One, Save One

A campaign to save Millions of babies !

The U.S. Knit & Crochet Stitchers have joined !

The Knit One, Save One campaign is bringing U.S. knitters and crocheters of all ages together to draw attention in Washington, D.C. to the nearly 4 million newborn deaths that occur each year in developing countries. Participants are asked to create one baby cap to keep a newborn warm during the first critical hours and days after birth, and to write a personal note to the President-elect asking him to lead the way in reducing newborn deaths globally.

To download a Knit One, Save One Action Kit, go to http://www.savethechildren.org/programs/health/child-survival/survive-to-5/knit-one-save-one.html or call 1-800-728-3843.

Why Your Cap MattersDid you know that 60 % of newborn deaths in developing countries can be prevented? It just takes a simple package of basic health measures provided to mothers and babies.Keeping a newborn warm is one of the simple steps for saving lives. That's where your cap comes in. Knit One, Save One is part of Survive to 5, Save the Children's commitment to saving the lives of babies and children.
Our Goals
Raise awareness of preventable newborn deaths — inexpensive solutions already exist
Encourage citizen action to help increase U.S. government funding
Increase private contributions — especially to bring health care to every village
Help us prevent four million newborn deaths each year.
